Criticism

We often look at Criticism as a bad thing, something that should be avoided at all costs. Unfortunately, we are never going to be able to avoid it, especially if we are sharing our work. So, what if we instead use criticism to our advantage?

Of course criticism isn't enjoyable, in fact, it can be down right discouraging, but it doesn't have to be. Think about this, why are people criticizing your work? Are they actually criticizing, or are you just seeing it that way? If someone says you need to change or add something to your writing, are they trying to hurt your feelings, or are they actually trying to help? Fortunately, no matter their intentions, it doesn't matter. All that matters is what you do with it.

When you are criticized for something, now it is time to research, not take offense. Perhaps they are even telling you in a purposely rude way, but still it doesn't really matter. If you have critics, that's great! Critics will make you think and point things out you may not have noticed. So, when you have a critic, thank them and ask for more feedback. When you do this, you may just be surprised by what happens.

I had a critic leave a poor review for one of my books in the past and of course I didn't like that, but I decided to try something out. Just as mentioned, I reached out to the critic and instead of arguing with them simply asked them for more feedback. Now, before I go on I do need to note something. Critics aren't always right. You don't have to listen to everything they are saying unless you do some research and find out they are correct. In the case of this critic, I did my research on what they were saying and realized they were right. After this realization, I changed some things then reached out and thanked them. When they saw how I responded and that I was willing to admit I had blundered, they were quite impressed. They even went back and took down their review to leave a much better one.

I have received some of my best ideas, and realizations because of critics. Whether they meant to help or not. Of course, some of them have had unfounded opinions, but many have helped me improve my writing.

In the end, I would implore you to look into what your critics say. If they are wrong, great and if they are right, great! If you use criticism to your benefit, it will no longer discourage you so much and you will often improve your work. It is always our choice how we will respond to people. No one has control over you, except for you. So, if it is your choice, why not use everything for your benefit?

You are truly amazing and have much to offer, so simply be who you are, someone truly magnificent.
